Dr. Pradeep Kumar Chowbey,
a Masters in Surgery from Jabalpur,
Madhya Pradesh began his career as a young Surgeon in New Delhi.
Starting from Holy Family Hospital, he moved on to Ram Manohar Lohia
Hospital and finally in 1984, he joined Sir Ganga Ram Hospital as a
Consultant Surgeon. He continued his quest for professional excellence
by training in some of the best medical institutions in the World
including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital, New York, John
Hopkins Institute in U.S.A. and Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital, in U.K.
It was during his visits to Germany and Singapore that he discovered
the benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery and trained in the art of it.
Dr. Chowbey was one of the first to perform Laparoscopic
cholecystectomy in North India and since then, has worked with
singular determination to develop, evaluate and propagate Minimal
Access Surgery in India. He has conducted over 200 workshops all over
the country and abroad to popularize the concept of minimal access
surgery
Building a Global Centre of Excellence
in Endo-surgery
In 1996, he established the Department of Minimal Access
Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, the first of its kind in the Asian
subcontinent. Today, this department is recognized and acknowledged as
a Global Centre of Excellence in the field of Endo-surgery. The
department attracts visiting surgeons from all over the world and has
already introduced & trained more than 1000 surgeons to the art of
Laparoscopic Surgery.
The National Board of Examinations has also nominated Dr. Chowbey
as the Convenor for conferring a Post Doctoral Fellowship in Minimal
Access Surgery from 2001. The Department of Minimal Access Surgery at
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi is the only centre in the country
recognized to award this fellowship.
