Contribution to
Cardiac surgery
- In 1990, Dr. Shetty became the first surgeon in India to conduct
Neonatal open
heart surgery by performing open-heart surgery on a 9 day old baby.
- He performed Asias first dynamic cardio-myoplasty operation to
strengthen
the weak heart muscle using the chest wall muscle.
- For the first time in India, he used a left ventricular assist device to
temporarily
support a failing heart.
- He is one of the few surgeons in the world to use a microchip
camera to
perform keyhole heart surgery.
- He has one of the largest experiences in the world in performing
bypass-
grafting operation on a beating heart.
- Dr. Shetty and his team made Narayana Hrudayalaya a post graduate
training
institute by conducting various training programs to train adult and
paediatric
cardiologists and surgeons along with cardiac anaesthetists and
intensivists
and offer degrees in these super specialties under National Board of
examination, Delhi, and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Health Sciences,
Bangalore.
Contribution to
the field of Medicine
- Dr. Shetty and his team have performed over twenty thousand
major heart
surgeries out of which 8000 operations were on children, many of them new
born babies.
- Dr. Shetty and his team have built 4 of the largest heart
hospitals in India
B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre, Kolkota in the year 1989, Manipal Heart
Foundation, Bangalore in the year 1997. Subsequently, they launched a
social
welfare organization called Asia Heart Foundation, which built East
Indias
largest Heart hospital The Rabindranath Tagore Institute of Cardiac
Sciences, Kolkota and a 780-bed heart hospital project in Bangalore
called
Narayana Hrudayalaya.
- To help poor heart patients in rural areas, Dr. Shetty and his
team set up one
of the worlds largest chains of coronary care units in association with
the
Indian Space Research Organization and various State Governments. These
coronary Care units are based in places like Tripura, Siliguri, and
Bankura in
West Bengal; Tinsukia of Assam and Chamarajanagar, a tribal belt of
Karnataka. The Telecardiology Network is connected to countries like
Germany and Malaysia.
-This tele-cardiology network has treated over sixteen thousand
patients,
entirely free.
- Dr. Devi Shetty and his team helped the Department of Cooperative
Societies,
Karnataka State, launch Yeshaswini Health scheme for 17 lakh farmers of
Karnataka State. Members of this scheme are eligible for free medical
consultation and free surgeries. In the last 18 month, over 20,000 people
underwent free surgeries. Now this scheme is on the verge of becoming a
nationwide program.
- Currently Dr. Shetty and his team run Rotary Narayana
Sankar Nethralaya, a
super specialty eye hospital in association with Sankar Nethralaya,
Chennai,
for the working class and poor patients of eastern India.

Cariothoracic Experience
During my training and the years since qualifying as Cardiothoracic
Surgeon, from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, I have been
involved in over eight thousand open, a fifteen hundred closed and
five hundred thoracic surgical procedures. This experience has been
gained as Assistant Surgeon, supervised surgeon, independent surgeon
and as surgeon supervising surgical trainees and junior surgeons,
Neonatal, infant Paediatric and adult subsets formed the patient
population, valvular, coronary, arrhythmia and the simple to the most
complex congenital procedures comprised the surgeries performed. This
experience was gained during tenure in the Christian Medical College
and Hospital, Vellore, super specialized centres in Adelaide and
Sydney, Australia, The Manipal Hospital and Narayana Hrudayalaya,
Bangalore.
