Manipal Hospital discovers cure
for Parkinson`s disease
Apr. 04th., 2007
Mr Andrew Kisana, a 58-year-old patient affected by Parkinson’s
disease has shown positive signs of cure with stem cell therapy.
With the success in treating this patient, India-based Manipal
Hospital has proved that stem cell therapy could be a potential
option for easing out symptoms in a patient suffering from
Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is a neuro-degenerative
disease that affects people over the age of 50.
At a press conference organized by Manipal Hospital, Mr Kisana, a
US-native suffering from Parkinson’s disease for more than 15 years,
admitted that the treatment with stem cells treats the root cause of
the disease. Mr Kisana is undergoing autologous stem cell therapy
from 2006. After this therapy, Mr Kisana has shown significant
recovery in his symptoms, by overcoming freezing attacks, speech
loss and nervous instability. He is now able to carry out
independent actions.
Researchers at Manipal Hospital isolated adult stem cells from Mr
Kisana’s own bone marrow. The cells were then processed and
multiplied at Manipal Hospitals’ Stem Cell Research Center,
Stempeutics Research Pvt Ltd, in an aseptic environment. With a
significant cell count of 1.5 million, the laboratory-grown stem
cells were then injected intravenously into Mr Kisana. The injected
stem cells resulted in regeneration of brain cells, which is slowly
alleviating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in Mr Kisana.
“Stem cell research seems to be promising in regenerating hope to
cure Parkinson’s disease. This will motivate innumerable patients
across the world to explore this new modality. However, we need to
observe the long term clinical effects in large number of patients
to decide its role in the treatment of the degenerative diseases,”
said Dr Ventakaramana K Neelam, Director, Manipal Institute of
Neurological Disorders.
In another clinical situation, Manipal Hospital has partially
treated a patient who has had a spinal cord injury. The patient was
paralyzed in a road accident. With stem cell therapy at Manipal
Hospital, the patient has now shown significant progress by
regaining his sensation and control over his reflexes.
Lead by Chief Scientific Officer of Stempeutics Research Pvt Ltd, Dr
Satish Totey and his team are exploring many debilitating diseases,
with limited possibility of recovery, that can be treated with stem
cell as a regenerative therapy. The team is investigating its
application in a slew of ailments under the medical fraternity.
Stempeutics Research’s goal is to prove the application of stem
cells in treatment of multiple sclerosis, myocardial infarction,
spinal cord injury and diabetes.
